Cosplay Feature: Kinpatsu Cosplay's Witch Gengar!

Shot by David Ngo

Giant conventions like Anime Expo are a great opportunity for friends to team up and collaborate with insane cosplay group ideas. This was absolutely the case when dozens of cosplayers got together for a Pokemon & Dungeons & Dragons group. I wanted to touch on this group for a few posts this month since some of them really are absolutely amazing. Starting off with Kinpatsu Cosplay as a Witch inspired version of Gengar! What's really great is that Kinpatsu herself gave a brief little write up of the cosplay as more photos were coming in over on her Instagram. She starts off by saying that this isn't the full version of the design she came up with. Stating that there were many more details added in. Specifically in the belts & buckles department. This was her first time creating a steel boned corset which at the time was 3 days before the convention itself, like true cosplay crunch fashion XD. So she instead brought along a partially finished version, stating that the full 2.0 version (as she puts it) will be finalized before Halloween. Sounds like excellent timing to me!

So what ends up becoming a part of a partially realized witch cosplay? Well for starters check out that hat!! It absolutely looks to be the same pattern Kinpatsu created/used for her Witch Princess Peach that I shared several years ago (check that out here!). Once the hat was formed via EVA foam, it's then covered up by a gorgeous deep shade of purple fabric matching Gengar's look. To really hammer that in, the base of the hat has some purple sticking out alongside evil looking red pieces to mimic Gengar's signature facial expression. You can then see hints of a black belt wrapped around the base directly below it.

Kinpatsu then has a long purple wig which has bangs traveling down each side of her face. Makeup wise you got dark lining around her eyes and what looks like dark purple lipstick. The photos I have to share also utilize different lighting techniques which originally had me guessing the lipstick color wrong. David up at the top has a slight lighter shade of purple going on (perhaps Lavender? *wink wink, nudge nudge*) whereas the other photos taken by Happy Trigger LA amplify the darker spooky vibes of the cosplay. Continuing on, you have a simple black bra top followed by the corset which was actually recycled from a past Death Knight cosplay Kinpatsu made since the one I mentioned at the start wasn't completed.

Kinpatsu has some black transparent sleeves and leggings which actually allow for her tattoos to shine through and at first glance I thought the sleeves themselves had some kind of intricate pattern to them so that had to have been planned right? So freaking cool! A black belt looks to be wrapped around her waist with a look at a pouch neslted on Kinpatsu's hip. Lastly, you have a brighter purple tabard draping down from the middle of the belt to a good portion of her legs? I can't imagine having that dragging down on the floor during the con. Can't be a witch without a cloak right? A slightly transparent purple cloak can be seen buckled together by a red gemstone near the shoulders.

I have to wonder how long the cosplay was worn when it came time to taking both the massive group shots in addition to the solo shots you see up above. Mainly because the hat itself looks very heavy to have on your head for long periods of time. This version alone is just absolutely stunning and I can't wait to see what the fully realized version will be once finished!
