Shutting One Door, Keeping others Open

UPDATED ON 8/20/21: Facebook, Patreon and Blog IG pages have been shutdown/discontinued As the COVID pandemic rages on and cons are even shutting down into 2021, it got me thinking on a drive home one night about how I'd feel with even coming back to blogging. When cons eventually do come back at some point. Truth be told, many of the posts and content I shared here could be transferred over to more discussions via my podcast CosplayBytes. I've been blogging my love for games, cons and cosplay for 7 years now and maybe it's time to say goodbye for now? My podcast has gotten me some incredible opportunities as a member of Press for conventions, and the rapid love I've had for streaming is also taking up a lot of time now. On top of multiple personal things on my end, I don't think I have the energy to keep this up even post COVID you know? The very first cosplay centered post I wrote was on Jessica Nigri's Deadpool, and since then it's spawned over 800 posts

STRUCK FIRST: Becka Noel + Saya Costumes as Symmetra and Brigitte!

Struck First gives you a first look at a cosplay just as it's been debuted/had its first photoshoot. Cosplayers have been kind enough to let me have a first crack at analyzing the cosplay by providing me with brand new pictures.

Like clockwork, cosplayer and designer Gladzy Kei drafted up some incredible concepts based around a collection of Overwatch females. Dubbed 'Mythic Overwatch', the idea is having these characters being inspired by Egyptian myths along with having a Cyberspace style to them. This was a pretty sizable group but unfortunately some of the members weren't able to make it to Katsucon where this project debuted. That being said, I want to share some of these lovely ladies! For this edition, I've got Becka Noel and Saya Costumes as Symmetra and Brigitte respectively. Kicking it off with Becka as Symmetra, holy gorgeousness Batman! There's so much shine in the gold alongside the blue and white color scheme.

Starting from the top, Becka is rocking a beautiful jet black wig with various bangs flowing down her front side. These bangs in particular are also adorned with small golden clasps at various points. Two ear like pieces are on either side of the wig and look to be vital in connecting the clear blue visor that Becka has traveling across her face. These pieces have an interesting shape with gold trim and white paint with a blue center. The neck piece shown is a full coverage with a single stripe done in blue. As I mentioned above the gold is very prominent in this cosplay. Becka has full black sleeves covering her arms with various gold bands that also have blue inserted at some point. The shapes are very triangular in nature.

One of the sleeves features golden claws and I don't know if that was in the original design or if it was just for the sake of Becka being able to wield her prop. It looks like she has a breastplate for chest coverage and then the fabric comes in right at the end. Starting with the breastplate, a blue diamond is taking centerstage in its design with gold taking up trim duties. The color also covers more than half of the cups on the piece overall! A triangular pattern makes up the bottom trim. I really love how you can tell the difference in the paint, with the white and blue being super smooth and the gold shining (as I keep mentioning XD).

The fabric comes in with an elaborate cape like piece with coverage in the back and opening in the front, much like the other girls I shared last week! Gold trim with an overall white base, plus the insides are done in a turquoise shade WITH EVEN MORE GOLD. The way some of the shots look and show this part makes me think the fabric is thick in its material! Becka's shoes have armor pieces layered on top of a boot base as is common for most parts of these cosplays. A lot more blue is shown with an interesting pattern making up the top portion of the boots. Prop wise, Becka has a small staff with blue and gold stripes. Suspended in the opened loop is a blue crystal! Also, the front of Becka's skirt has a centered flap with a gold/blue pattern after having mainly white take up most of it. THE PHOTOS ARE GORGEOUS!

I was beyond excited when I learned that precious bean Saya Costumes got invited to be a part of this group! I met her through friends at last year's Katsu and she was just such a sweetheart <3. For Brigitte, Saya has a lot more fabric going on, with the armor being a small breastplate and the various arm/leg bands PLUS a hefty belt around the waist. Her wig is quite the spectacle as it has small strands in the front laced with small gold/blue hoops but then goes into party mode in the back. Mainly with a single long ponytail done up with several coverings in gold at the start with a smaller one in gold and black later on. Small arm bands can be seen following a poofy blue cuff and then a classic arm gauntlet.

The main part is with the chest piece. The armor section is relatively small consisting of a full gold coverage with a small blue insert smack dab in the middle as well as on the sides. I think this was to allow the blue sash to take center stage. Coming off one of her shoulders, a giant blue sash with gold etching can be seen traveling down all the way to the bottom which then forms a tabard like piece! Towards the bottom, gold ends it off with some strands traveling down. Blue diamonds can be seen trickling down as well! The arm gauntlets have a stellar way of sectioning off certain parts to create the pattern that it does!

I really love how Saya was able to do the golden etching/designs into this lower part of the cosplay! Quickly want to also mention that the belt is full on gold with some small blue inserts here and there. It seems that the inside of this fabric portion is done in that same brown. OH and the main chest piece seems to have a corset like part underneath the breastplate. For her legs/feet, Saya has multiple bands of different styles and lengths done in blue and gold.

Some even have brown fabric to connect things together. Small brown tabard pieces can be seen peeking out of the skirt too! For her prop, Saya went balls to wall and reconstructed Brigitte's mace! The handle looks to be black with gold wrapped around it. The hilt is full gold as is most of the main part of the weapon. There's large black portions circling around the mace with blue parts as well!

Saya did such an incredible job with this cosplay as did Becka with hers, GO LOOK AT MY FRIENDS AMAZINGNESS <3.

Both Becka Noel and Saya Costumes are incredibly sweet and talented ladies. You'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by not following their work at the links below! I really hope you guys are enjoying my Katsucon coverage so far! There might be a gap in them due to lack of photos so I apologize about that in advance!
