Shutting One Door, Keeping others Open

UPDATED ON 8/20/21: Facebook, Patreon and Blog IG pages have been shutdown/discontinued As the COVID pandemic rages on and cons are even shutting down into 2021, it got me thinking on a drive home one night about how I'd feel with even coming back to blogging. When cons eventually do come back at some point. Truth be told, many of the posts and content I shared here could be transferred over to more discussions via my podcast CosplayBytes. I've been blogging my love for games, cons and cosplay for 7 years now and maybe it's time to say goodbye for now? My podcast has gotten me some incredible opportunities as a member of Press for conventions, and the rapid love I've had for streaming is also taking up a lot of time now. On top of multiple personal things on my end, I don't think I have the energy to keep this up even post COVID you know? The very first cosplay centered post I wrote was on Jessica Nigri's Deadpool, and since then it's spawned over 800 posts

STRUCK FIRST: Phalafel Cosplays as Calamity Ganon!

Struck First gives you a first look at a cosplay just as it's been debuted/had its first photoshoot. Cosplayers have been kind enough to let me have a first crack at analyzing the cosplay by providing me with brand new pictures.

If there's some constants when it comes to Phalafel Cosplays, it's Animal Crossing and the Legend of Zelda. Today's post takes a look at the latter with her AMAZING Calamity Ganon cosplay from Breath of the Wild that she created for Katsucon a few months ago. What caught my eyes immediately is this gorgeous purple cape that looks to be attached from the back. Most likely it's around the shoulder pieces which I'll get to later in the post. Phalafel's hair is a bright shade of red and you also have a crown that rests on top here. Said crown is designed much like the other armor pieces. Heavily referencing Ganon's look in the game plus the Guardians that roam around Hyrule. Various cylinder like parts poke out the top. Dark brown with black and some light tan make up the color scheme. Again, these colors play a huge part in the other armor and weaponry!

Speaking of weaponry, Phalafel is dual-wielding a sword and arm cannon much like what Ganon has in the final portions of the game. What's really awesome is that the sword has this complex LED system sandwiched between foam and yes, it absolutely lights up! The full blade itself looks to be done in foam with some patterning in another color to give off the runes seen in the game. The arm cannon on the other hand is pretty large in size. The inside portion looks to be that light electric blue/green color with alternating colors of light brown and dark brown. The middle section is covered with Guardian imagery and runes!

The shoulder pieces and breastplate follow this formula to amazing detail! Blue nodes are seen on the chest piece with one being square centered up! Hip armor is present in the form of three pieces done in white and layered on top of one another in an angled fashion. Directly below the chest is a small belt which then transitions into a gorgeous tabard. Same shade as the cape with some gold imagery and the Triforce down at the bottom!

The image above gives an AWESOME closeup view of Phalafel's leg armor. You've got kneecap pieces, and the leg itself being done in several tiered layers much like the hip  section is. I LOVE the Eye of Malice that's incorporated on both legs. After that, you have that same Guardian style and color scheme making up the rest of the armor. Shoe wise, Phalafel is working them heels! I imagine walking for long periods of time grew tiring but it doesn't look TOO cumbersome overall. Phalafel is someone who is clearly passionate about the franchises she loves the most. The amount of work put into Calamity Ganon is just astounding and I fangirled so much over the completed outfit!
