Game Review: Hades
Since I had such a wonderful experience with Transistor a few weeks back, I then decided it was time to dive into Hades, the latest rouge-like action game from Supergiant. The stunning art style and design piqued my interest at first and then I soon found myself being addicted to its gameplay. Hades has you play as the young prince of the Underworld, Zagreus. He's grown tired of living there with his father and schemes up a plot to break out of the domain. Though once learning of his true nature in regards to his missing mother, the quest soon turns into a mission to find and bring her back to where she was. I was absolutely stunned by the amount of new dialogue there is at every single turn of the game. All the characters are voiced wonderfully and I grew to love the relationships they have with Zagreus. Oh and yes, you can pet the dog in this game (Cerberus) and it's wonderful.

Before you head out to make your escape, you have a variety of Infernal Arms to equip and choose from. These can drastically affect your control setup alongside the various boons you receive along your journey. Being the son of Hades also ties you to the other gods up on Olympus, who see your plight and assist you by granting a variety of abilities tailored to them. You may have arrows unleash after every strike thanks to Artemis, lightning strike your foes after dashing from Zeus, or inflict a hangover thanks to Dionysus. This led to some insane builds during my various runs and allowed me to feel truly invincible at some points. Each room is changed at random though you're given a glimpse at the reward as you head through each door. What I found to be comforting is that after you fail an attempt, the dialogue shifts even for the Olympus gods as you rediscover them. They cheer you on and note at how far you've previously came. That cheered me up and kept me going.
You can develop your skills through the collection of Darkness during each run (in addition to increasing your health total and gold for shopping) which in turn makes you stronger and have more options at your disposal. Once you successfully do a clear though, you'll find that there's still much more to be done. Each clear clocked in for me at around 30 min. That is certainly short but Hades as a whole has a ton of replay value. I certainly can see myself going back to it and experiment with different weapons and boon combinations. The music is stellar and I seriously can't praise the graphical style/art design enough. Hades has so much to offer and if you're a fan of Supergiant's previous titles, this should be an instant pickup for you! Apologies if this is somewhat a short review but I think I detailed as much as needed that the game has to offer! Check out these screenshots from my time with the game.
